So let me start with a few pictures I took this morning.
Pete, one of our miniature donkeys here at Mary Has A Little Farm, has for several years represented the donkey in today's scripture readings.
The Legend of the Jerusalem donkey or also commonly known as the "Jesus donkey" can easily be found (several versions in fact) on the internet.
I will share with you the most common and the one we share with our students who come here to visit the farm.
The legend goes that the little donkey that carried Jesus into Jerusalem a week before He was crucified also followed Him to Calvary and was there when they hung Him from the cross. The little donkey so loved the Lord that he wanted to help Him carry the cross, but alas there was nothing he could do, and he was pushed away. Being the loyal donkey that he was he waited to say goodbye until nearly all had left. He was a very sad little donkey. However Jesus had a heart for the humble donkey and wanted to give him something for his loyalty so as the donkey turned to leave, the shadow of the cross fell upon his back and shoulders, and there it remains to this day, a sign of Gods love for the world.
What a beautiful image that these little creatures carry with them. What a fun way to announce the good news and share the love Jesus has for us.
We love our two miniature donkeys Pete and his side-kick Jenny, who is only 2 years old, they are both very comical and have lots of personality. They both bear the sign of the cross and although they are similar they say no 2 crosses are alike.
We hope you have enjoyed hearing about the legend of the Jerusalem donkey and as we journey through Holy week we can reflect on our journey and our cross and remember that if Jesus loves the little donkey He loves us too!
